Hi guys!

So I have to say Junior year is by far the hardest! My work load is pretty tough but that doesn’t mean I haven’t had any fun 🙂

Here’s a few things I’ve been up to lately:

1. Attended a talk on Leveraging Social Media in the Job Search hosted by Career Planning (how Facebook can actually make you look good!)

2. Watched an amazing film called My Life Without Me directed by Isabel Coxiet for my Cinema and the Second Sex course. Its now one of my favorites.

3. Got a new INTERNSHIP at a social media marketing company called Social Turbine. I did find this internship on my own, but wooo for HC and helping me become such a good speaker and networker.

4. Attended an alumni career fair and met HC alum from the companies Cone Communications and Extension Engine.

5. Tailgated the last home football game against Lafayette, which we won.

6. Programmed a robot in computer science.

7. This sunday I’m attending a concert at the DCU Center in Worcester. Im pretty excited so yay for getting involved in the city around us.

Anyways, I hope this gives you an idea of what I’ve been up to these past few weeks. I’ll be sure to have another post soon!

Sarah

Look what i saw while walking outside of Hogan the other day! Double rainbows really do exist, especially at HC =]

Check out the new Hogan quad too! (Healy dorm in the back)

Hi guys!

So it’s time for my first real update of Junior year. I’ve been here for about a month and I’ve finally had some time to settle in and write a post!

First off I have to say I’m loving the renovations around campus. Each year Holy Cross tries to make some big improvements to keep us students happy and to keep the campus fresh and exciting. Last year it was the science building, and this year the main project was the new senior apartments with a bunch of smaller improvements.

1. The new senior apartments aka Figge Hall are SO nice. The building is completely modern featuring apartment style suites and is located right next to the Hart gym. Maybe I’ll be living there next year!

2. The Hogan quad has also been redone with a new outdoor patio and seating. You can always find students out there doing homework or meeting with friends. HC has really transformed the quad into a social gathering spot on campus, plus the new landscaping looks fantastic!

3. The Stein Cool Beans coffee house: CB2 which used to be just a coffee stand, has now transformed into a full coffee house! A lot of students have been looking for a coffee house type option around campus so good work HC. Campus officials are really starting to listen to our needs! The coffee house has a more intellectual atmosphere which is great for doing work.

I’m so lucky I get to enjoy all of these new improvements while I’m still here at HC!

So I bet you’re wondering how my classes and social life are. I have to say, I picked out an awesome course schedule this semester. Each year you become more familiar with the departments and professors, and you figure out what types of courses you like best. So this semester I am taking:

Feminist Literary Theory (for my Studies in World Lit major STWL)

Cinema and the Second Sex (a film course based on female directors for STWL)

Techniques of Computer Programming (for a possible computer science minor)

Entrepreneurship and the World Economy (an intro to ECON for non-ECON majors)

I have to say there isn’t one class or professor I dislike. Each class is completely different and taught in a different manner so I have a great variety. I would say my Cinema course is the most enjoyable, I really like the class discussions and analyses of the films we watch. I also think computer science is pretty cool although its hard. I just think computers are so interesting in our technology-driven society, so the class is definitely worth the effort.

As for my friends and social life, there’s nothing like being back on campus after a long summer.  There’s something about Holy Cross that makes everyone have an instant connection here. We all have a certain Holy Cross-ness  from going here that makes being on campus so fun. Last weekend I went out the the Flying Rhino on Shrewsbury Street with my roomie Adriana and our two new friends John and Andrew (who are conveniently our neighbors, its so easy to make friends here). Now that I have a car its fun to take full advantage of Worcester with my friends.

Anyways I’m off to do some homework. Just wanted to give you guys a quick update on how everything is going!

Can’t wait to share more as the semester progresses.

-Sarah

WOW i cannot believe how fast summer went by! I had the most amazing summer ever living in Boston for my internship at TechTarget. I not only had a great job experience, but I made so many new friends in the city. I will definitely be visiting them for sure.

But for now its back to HOLY CROSS. T minus six days until I am back on the Hill and I cannot wait.

Holy Cross cannot come soon enough. I am so optimistic that my junior year will be the best yet and I can’t wait to share this experience with you here on my blog.

So heres to Holy Cross and my junior year. Lets get ready =]

-Sarah!

So I think this is a  pretty good time to reflect on my time here at Holy Cross. I’m about to be a junior, which means making the transition into a upperclassman. From here on out is going to be some serious stuff: networking, internships, making connections all so I can get a job after Holy Cross. Ideally I want a career in marketing/ communications/online media and I have to say I think im headed on the right track. I would love to work at a creative marketing firm like Hill Holiday in Boston.

So what I want to reflect on is how my sophomore year has shaped me at Holy Cross, because I really do think I have grown since my first year as a timid freshman.

Looking back, I realize how much confidence I’ve gained by the end of my sophomore year. I think this is one of the most important gifts Holy Cross has given me because it translates into every part of my life. I used to be petrified of public speaking, interviews, or just making new friends in general in unfamilair situations. After the Summer Business Program (SBP), writing ten page papers, participating in class discussions, emailing professors and other professionals, I find I have the ability to efforlessly communicate and interact with my peers and colleagues. Wether it be in a professional or social setting I am NEVER nervous or uncomortable. I have a newfound quiet confidence inside myself that helps me get through any situation with poise. I can’t even begin to explain how invaluble this has been for me.

Because of this confidence I’ve landed my SECOND internship, where I’ve been able to grow even more in an unfamiliar environment. I now work at the IT tech company TechTarget as an Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Intern. That means I add value to our webpages  by editing content so they can be found easier in search engines online. While I admit I was afraid at first, I once again have learned to adapt to a new environment and am finding myself overcoming new obstacles every day. I definitely feel a sense of accomplishment with everything I am learning here and doing here at TechTarget. I’m turning into a little techie, I kind of like it.

Socially my confidence has lead me to have the most memorable year in my life. I love the fact that I now can go up to anyone at a party or in the dining hall and strike up a conversation. All it takes is one introduction at Holy Cross and then you start saying hi around campus and before you know it you have a new friend. As a sophomore I can honestly say I had the best time on the weekends. The weekends are time to relax and decompress from our stressful weeks so  I definitely took advantage of that. Since I was more adapted to the social scene (as compared to being a baby freshman) I always had something to do and friends to see. There was neve r a dull moment this year.

*Here’s a pic of me (in the yellow!) and my best friends!

I think if I had to pick a motto for sophomore year it would be: sieze the moment and don’t let the little things bother you because life is too short. Some people can get so stressed out and caught up in the workload or their problems that they forget to enjoy college. We are only college students for four years of our entire lives so I want to make the most of it. I definitely value this time and want to take adavantage of every opportunity that comes my way. And HC sure does have a lot of opportunities.

I can’t wait for my junior year. If it’s any continuation of my sophomore year, I may never want to leave the gates of Holy Cross.

Hope you guys liked this post! It means a lot to me.

Hi Guys!

Happy Easter! One of the benefits of going to a Catholic school is that we have an Easter break, which other schools don’t normally have. This break may be my favorite break because of its perfect timing being right before finals. It’s definitely nice to go home and recharge my batteries before we get back for spring weekend and endless amounts of papers and studying for finals.

So tonight I’m heading over to my grandmas for a family dinner then its back home to back for HC. I have an interview with the tech company TechTarget Monday morning so I’ll be up bright and early for the interview then going back to school to get a head start on some papers I have due next week. One thing I can say about HC is we definitely work hard during the week. I will probably be in the library every chance I get this week nonstop until I finish my 6-7 page and 8-10 page paper. But the good thing about slaving away during the week is that the weekends are SUPER fun! I think each weekend of my spring semester has only gotten more and more fun. So if I have to slave away during the week to allow me to have fun on the weekends, I’ll do it. It’s all about time management here at Holy Cross.

Hope everyone has a happy bunny day!

Hi Guys!

Current location: eating cheerios in my room after my Monstrous European Lit class. (the topic today was vampires!)

So its almost half way through my second semester of sophomore year. Wow this has gone by so fast, i cannot believe I’m almost halfway done with my college career! Right about now spring fever is hitting campus and the sophomore slump is kicking in. Luckily for me the sophomore slump isn’t too bad because i love my classes so much. While most classes tend to drag on towards the end of the spring semester, I’m still quite interested in all my course material. Speaking of…I just made my advising appointment to discuss classes for the fall. I personally love picking out classes, Holy Cross has some really intriguing courses to offer. So what are my tenative classes? Im considering:

18th Century Novel, Russian Cinema, Feminist Literary Theory, Sociology of TV and Media, and Techniques of Computer Programming

All of these classes sound pretty interesting right? Luckily for me my Studies in World Literatures major allows me to find some unique classes.

Classes aside, like I said spring fever is kicking in around campus. I really do love the spring semester because everyone is always active and outside. Say hello to music blaring from the dorms, frisbee on Easy Street, and tons of people hanging out on the dorm lawns (or beaches as we sometimes call them). With spring also comes Spring Weekend, possibly the best weekend of the year. HC just announced today that J. Cole and the Far East Movement are coming to preform at our spring concert, not too shabby.

Anyways, I just wanted to share a little bit with you, what I’ve been thinking about, what’s going on around campus. Now I’m off to Crossroads for some dinner (the salad bar is awesome!).

Until Next Time,

Sarah

Hi guys!

So I’ve been super busy lately! Let me share with you a little bit of what I’ve been up to.

1. I went to a talk on biodiversity by Kieran Suckling who has been called “America’s most radical environmentalist.” Keiran, who established the Center for Biological Diversity, is currently suing BP for $19 billion dollars for the Gulf oil spill.  The talk was definitely interesting and made me wonder, “what would our world be like without species diversity?”

2.  I have now gone to church three weeks in a row. I hardly ever went last semester, but I am really enjoying going every Sunday. I find myself looking forward to the homily and after church i always feel so refreshed and ready to start the week with a great perspective.

3. I had two interviews this week. The first was an interview for an account management intern position at the marketing/consulting firm the Geppetto Group. I learned about the Geppetto Group through the Summer Internship Program, which i had to apply to. If you take advantage of the Career Planning Center and Pre-Business Program at Holy Cross you can really get some great opportunities. (Trust me as someone who has already had an internship the summer after my freshman year.) My second interview was for a tour guide position in the Admissions Office. Both of these interviews went really well so let’s all keep our fingers crossed that i get the positions!

4. I went to the basketball game this past Saturday. We beat Lehigh and are onto the Patriot League Quarterfinals against Layfayette tonight which is pretty exciting.

5. As for the rest of this week only three classes and one more exam stand between me and spring break!! Unlike most of my friends who are going to Naples, Punta Cana, and Panama City to name a few, I will be here on campus for the Executive Leadership Workshop. I have to admit I’m not thrilled for the all day meetings and seminars, but I know the experience will be invaluable. Im ready for a new challenge and to open more doors for my future.

Until next time,

Sarahh!

Hello!

Current location: Lehy study rooms with Brittany finishing up a philosophy paper.

So i’ve had a pretty eventful weekend and I’m ready to tell you all about it.

On Saturday I went to the basketball game since it was homecoming weekend. The entire game was sold out and we played the #1 seed Bucknell. There was also a nice little ceremony honoring the top three basketball alumni. The games are always pretty fun, but this game was super intense and close. It turns out we lost by four points, but it was a really exciting game (especially when a student dressed as a giant yellow Big Bird got hit in the head with the ball). My friends and I went to Kballs after the game. Kimball had a new dessert, which continued my excitment from the game. The raspberry lemon bread pudding may be my new favorite dessert. Props to Kimball for stepping it up this semester.

After dinner my friends and I got ready and went out. We started off in Loyola, then went to Alumni (both junior dorms), then headed off campus. It had a ton of fun and managed to yet again meet more new people!

Sunday morning I was back at Kimball at 10:30. I guess you can say I enjoy Kballs because I spent two hours there! Sometimes people watching and talking gets the best of my friends and I.

Anyways, I had no homework on Sunday (such a rarity) so I went to the theatre department’s spring play with my friend Matt. The play was a musical called the Drowsy Chaperone and  featured  my good friends Jon and Suzanne. The Drowsy Chaperone was comedy/musical set in the 1920’s. I have to say i was impressed. I’ve never been to a play on campus and I’m definitely glad i went!

After the play I grabbed some lunch at Crossroads, headed to the library for a bit, then went to church with Brittany. We’ve both vowed to make more of an effort to go to church this semester. I felt instantly better after going to church today so I’m starting off my week on a high note!

–XoXo

Hi Guys!

Being back on the Hill from break has been amazing. Going home for break always makes the first few weeks back extra exciting.

So what have I been up to exactly?

Well we just had our first full week of class and I can say I really like my classes this semester. Each semester is different depending on your course load and I think I have a good balance this semester. I have a little bit of everything between philosophy, computer programming, and two lit courses. I particularly like my computer science class. We are learning how to write computer programs in a computer language called Python. Cool right? The work isn’t too bad yet either considering we’ve only had one full week so that means I’ve had extra time for socializing.

Besides classes, I’m applying to be a tour guide (yet another way I can work in the Admissions Office) and I’ve been trying to make as many new friends as possible. What I like so much about new semesters is that it makes it really easy to make new friends in class or in general. Everyone has new schedules so you see people you have never seen before. Hello Kimball dates with new friends.

…speaking of Kimball they’ve made some new changes such as converting the ice cream bar to dinner and offering more vegetarian options, which i like. Yay for Kimball!

Anyways we have been getting TONS of snow. Not going to lie, walking to class has been pretty brutal with all the stairs and hills but somehow we manage. At least I had a snow day last Wednesday. Both of my teachers cancelled class.

All in all I’m happy to be back. So far this semester has been the best yet so i can only predict that it will keep getting better.
